Google Confirms, Keyword Meta Tag useless for Search Rankings!

Hello ProStores Merchants!

Many of you may or may not have heard and/or talked with people discussing how useful the keyword meta tag is in helping your site rank well in Google and other engines.

Example:

Popular belief among many non-seo experience people is that it matters and you should use it, in some cases almost abuse it, to help your site/page gain ranking for a word or phrase.

Most seo experienced people will tell you that it probably doesn’t matter and would strongly recommend against overuse or ‘stuffing’ it with lots of variations on a word or phrase. (This has been our official stance).

Well Matt Cutts (head of the anti-web spam team at Google) has confirmed that Google’s official use of the keyword meta tag means exactly zilch!

They DON’T use it to calculate where to rank your site in a natural search for a word or phrase, at all.

There you go, official word from Google. Obviously this isn’t a reflection of the other search engines official position, but the unofficial word is that they don’t do it either and I’ll never recommend it myself for any of my clients. 🙂

Thanks,
Matt
